Caring for our over 100+ animals and maintaining our beautiful gardens means cleaning and properly disposing of organic waste. We are careful to ensure that this waste does not end up in a landfill. Instead, we use a five-bin compost system to turn organic waste into gardening soil. Decomposers – worms, beetles, mushrooms, and bacteria – all break down the natural waste into usable compost full of the vital nutrients for growth: nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. We regularly flip the compost, which adds the air necessary for our decomposers into the next bin before sitting in a resting pile, ready for use. Not only do we prevent hundreds of pounds of waste from ending up in landfills every year, but we also reduce our gardening costs for fertilizer. While our bin system is large enough to accommodate our massive output, backyard composting doesn’t need to take up nearly as much space with all the same rewards.
