Greenhouse

A greenhouse operates by letting in large amounts of light through its glass roof and walls, trapping it as heat energy. The greenhouse stays warm and protected from weather extremes throughout the year, allowing us to start our organic garden indoors, as well as grow heat-loving tropical plants. During the winter months, we work with the Garden Club of Irvington who propagate their plants for their annual plant sale, held the Saturday before Mother’s Day. During summertime, you can catch our rotating greenhouse exhibit to get up close and personal with some of our plants.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is the process of growing plants in water without soil. In order for the plants to receive all the nutrients they require to grow, a mineral solution is added to the water. The constant movement of this water mixture flows directly to the roots, allowing plants to grow at a much faster rate than when planted in soil. Hydroponics also uses significantly less water than growing in soil as the water is recycled in a closed system. The convenience and sustainable benefits of hydroponic horticulture makes it a great method for urban agriculture. Our hydroponic efforts allow us to grow fresh greens, fruits and other vegetables for our animal ambassadors to eat year-round.
