The Westchester County Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF) is a facility that accepts special waste (including household hazardous waste) from Westchester residents year round.

Accepted Wastes:
• Automotive fluids (except motor oil)
• Metal, jewelry and furniture polish
• Photo and swimming pool chemicals
• Kerosene and other flammable liquids
• Wood preservatives and stains
• Car tires (with or without rims)
Confidential documents for shredding (up to 4 file boxes per visit)*
• Propane tanks
• Mercury thermometers, thermostats
• Electronic waste (e.g. computers and peripherals, TVs, cell phones, etc.)*
• Fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs and tube-shaped fluorescent bulbs)*
• Freon-containing appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers)*
• Batteries – auto, rechargeable & button cell (Alkaline and carbon-zinc batteries can be safely discarded with the household trash)*

What’s NOT Accepted
Asbestos (Under NO circumstances will asbestos be accepted)
• Construction & Demolition Debris — including wood and shingles
• Curbside recyclables (glass, metal, plastic, cardboard and paper products)
• Smoke and fire detectors (contact manufacturer first for possible return service; dispose of in trash if unable to return)
• Medical waste (except pharmaceuticals)
• Sharps (medical needles & syringes)
• Non-rechargeable alkaline and carbon zinc batteries (dispose in trash)
• Motor oil
• Explosives (e.g. fireworks, bullets and flares — call your local police dept. for instructions)
• Plastic bags (bring to large retailer)
• Papers from businesses, institutions, or commercial enterprises will not be accepted for shredding. County staff will reject any paper identified as commercial or institutional.
