Not all of our garden space is suitable for garden plants – some places are too damp from runoff and under the shade.

While that means we do not have the conditions to grow produce, we still use this area to grow another edible: mushrooms! Using the lasagna method, we layered straw and mushroom spores to build our bed up. After, all we have to do is keep the bed damp and allow the fungi to grow.

We grow blue oyster mushrooms, which overwinters here in Zone 7 very well, allowing us to grow this healthy protein year after year.
